Well, in terms of cognitive psychology, it's faster and more accurate for humans to react to a stimulus which is in the same relative location as the response.

In this case, the stimulus is someone pointing to their wrist, and the response is to look at your own wrist, which should in theory occur with more speed and accuracy than if someone just asked the time.

If someone asks for the bathroom, you respond by telling them where it is, not by using your own crotch, so the action of pointing at one's crotch would serve no function. It's called the Simon Effect.
