dur?

Hey remember that animal rights fanatic I mentioned last Friday? The one that says anybody that eats animals are evil? Well she came into group today wearing Adidas and had a backpack that had leather strip. I made eye contact with her and looked down at her feet. She looked mad when I did that but I think I made my point without saying anything. I just couldn't let that go. I tried to not buy leather products, I eat meat but I see no reason to use animals for clothes. I found that it is so damn hard to buy shoes with no leather, especially for wide and large feet. I eventually gave up. I have some canvas shoes but one or two pairs of tennis shoes. I will never ever buy fur, no freaking point to fur.

Anyway, yeah.

Well the way I see it, leather is a by-product of meat. Since cows are being slaughtered for us to eat, it seems like a waste to me not to use their leathery leathery hide for something. I also have nothing against rugs and clothes being made of cow hides or sheep skins (though personally I think cow hides are a little ugly). But killing an animal *just* for their fur, especially an endangered one...no. Just plain wrong. And that chick in your group? What a hypocrite. I say *kicks in the head* to her and her dumbass PeTA.

That's what I think about leather...at least once I sat down and thought about it. That's when I started to buy my tennis shoes again :)

Youre right, it is very hard to find non leather shoes, but I try to get them. I dunno, even if she is a militant vegan she wouldnt bother me tooooo much. I agree with the politics of veganism and may become one someday. Besides its nice to see people passion about something. Usually that kind of intolerant militance goes away as you age.. how old is she?

It is, Whenever I see canvas shoes in my shoe size I swipe them up because it's just so hard to fine them (I'm 10 1\2 at least plus a wide). I love Easy Spirit shoes :)
I agree about the passion, I'm passionate about animal welfare and the enviornment.
She's 28.

Your icon is so familier but I just can't place it!

Oh dear, she's too old to be a militant vegan! Youre right, they push people away from the cause.

The icon is from Sword and the Stone. He's the wolf who tries to eat Wart. :)

Thus is the problem with being a fanatic, one gets so easily caught. Maybe she brought them second-hand, though? Heheh, I just say I'm the worst vegan ever, then don't worry about it.
Personally, I think animal clothing ranges from tacky to hideous. Leather is difficult, because being a cheap yet profitable by-product of the meat industry is EVERYWHERE - it is THE accessory. Best bet for shoes is little online places, which isn't so great if one wants to, I don't know, try on their shoes first. Even if one eats meat, it is just about impossible to find humane treated and slaughtered leahter products - sausage? Sure, check a local healthfood market. Wallet? Erm. Well. Good luck. Overshadowing is, of course, the premium "calf-skin" and such leathers, which I've got a pretty good idea ARE just slaughtered for their leather sales. Chinchilla, snakes, even minks - the fact they're slaughtered for a status symbol does gross me out.
But then, I view most meat consumption as a luxury most people aren't willing to give up.

I try not to buy leather either, but I can't afford the vegan shoes. And they don't look so good. :(
But no leather clothes, so I'm doing good.
No fur ever. So lame...:P
